Christianity is strange; it bids man to recognize that he is vile, and even abominable, yet bids him want to be like God. Without such a counterweight his exaltation would make him horribly vain or his abasement horribly abject.
Knowing God without knowing our wretchedness makes for pride. Knowing our wretchedness without knowing God makes for despair. Knowing Jesus Christ strikes the balance because he shows us both God and our wretchedness.
